A look into the past
A project by Alvaro Grasso
Welcome to this cultural and photographic project that was born in 2020 with the aim of rescuing and revaluing the visual memory of different cities through comparative photography. Its essence consists of taking old images and reframing them in the present from the same point of view, thus creating a visual bridge between the past and the present.
The project began in Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay), where family and public archives were explored to reconstruct urban history from an intimate and human point of view. Subsequently, it expanded to other cities, including a phase in Germany in 2024, focusing on the city of Landau in der Pfalz, taking advantage of its rich history and preserved architecture.
More than just a visual comparison, A Look into the Past invites reflection on the passage of time, urban change, and the collective identity of cities. The project seeks to generate a dialogue between generations and a new way of exploring and valuing local heritage.
Today, it continues to grow with new cities, stories and protagonists, consolidating itself as a living proposal that connects emotions, memories and territory.
